Athenree Pancake House
About This Spot
Stepping into Athenree Pancake House feels like slipping into a cherished corner of a quieter New Zealand morning. Tucked modestly along State Highway 2, this unassuming café holds a gentle rhythm all its own—unrushed yet inviting, nostalgic yet enduring. The worn wood tones and simple furnishings speak of years spent welcoming locals and travelers alike, offering a pause from the road with a comforting sense of familiarity.
The atmosphere here isn't polished or flashy, but it’s quietly warm and sincere. Conversations drift easily between tables, mingling with the soft purr of content cats weaving their way through the room—an unexpected but endearing touch of home. Outside, the creek just beyond extends a whisper of natural calm, where eels gather patiently, adding a subtle layer of connection to place that visitors often discover after their meal.
Here, pancakes are more than just breakfast—they’re a canvas for both classic indulgence and inventive heartiness. Whether you lean toward sweet memories flavored by fresh berries and honey or savor the rich, savory combinations brimming with local ingredients, each bite reveals a thoughtful balance of tradition and warmth. The menu invites personal stories: families discovering old favorites, couples sharing contrasting tastes, children wide-eyed with delight at the milkshakes and playful company of the café’s resident felines.
Athenree Pancake House doesn’t rush its guests or chase trends, which is precisely where its charm lies. It’s a space that holds small communal moments—a friendly greeting from the staff, the joy of feeding eels just outside, the quiet comfort of comfort food made with care. For those who venture here, it’s a gentle reminder that sometimes the most memorable experiences come from the simplest places, where the heart in the service and the subtle atmosphere linger long after the last pancake is savored.

Old fashioned pancake place that's easy to miss driving past but worth a visit! Delicious, very attentive service, good value and a nice setting too - yes it's old but it's part of the charm, plus they have friendly cats that were entertaining to watch. The sort of small business that deserves support.

Location is a bit tired, but that does not detract from the awesome pancake concept on offer. They have savory pancake options that would rival and exceed anything you could get on a pizza. Lovely surroundings, despite being very close to the main road. There is a little stream just below the shop with eels that you can feed. They are used to being fed by the locals and gather at the normal feeding area as soon as they sense movement.

These guys do great pancakes both savory and sweet. My kids used to love this place it has been around a long time... Make sure you ask the owners for a piece of bread and go out to the creek behind to see the eels it is well worth it.

Stopped for breakfast on our way out of town. Had the most amazing pancakes! Savoury and sweet so both my wife and I could eat what we liked! Really lovely staff as well, managed to spill my milkshake everywhere and they were so lovely when it came to cleaning it up. Oh, also if you love cats this is a great spot as well, they have 4 cats that are very friendly, though probably just trying to get food 110% will come again.
